It is that time of year again! The time to talk about winter haircare, because now is the season to keep your hair bouncin’ and behavin’. Now, this information is good regardless of if you live near the deserts of the west coast, the low temperature areas of the east coast, or simply somewhere in-between. When winter comes, humidity drops, it is a fact that things get cold, and our hair gets dry. Most will notice in winter, whether you live by snow, or if your winter is a light to heavy rain, your skin dries out exponentially, our hair even more so! (The season of stocking up on Costco grade moisturizer is now upon us!) While using lotion and moisturizer is always an added level of protection to keep our skin from getting dry, what then can we do about our hair? Especially if our waves, coils, curls and textures are just naturally prone to be ‘moisture repellant’? Does the winter weather bring about a death sentence to us all? On the contrary, the winter weather can actually be just the break your hair has been desperately begging for! By break, we definitely are not talking about that nasty thing called breakage! We are talking about ways to guard against unnecessary winter breakage. Ways to keep our hair moisturized retain length and see an overall improvement in our hair health and thickness.

One of the best ways to start is by letting your hair have a well-deserved rest! Protective styles help to lock in moisture, and fight against snapping ends. Now if you are like me, and you have been natural for a while, I know you wear a sense of pride in your crown. You want to show off that natural beauty that is all self-grown in her fullest glory... the last thing you probably want to hear is protective styling for healthy hair. This is why today I want to introduce you to the method of the blowed-braid out. Like all good methods, this one begins with a happy, healthy, well-oiled scalp. In assuming that you are still like me, and you have a lot of hair, wintertime washday (any wash day really) can seem like a drag. The anticipation of cramping arms, the questions of will my hair dry quick enough before I have to leave the house? Sometimes, if we are being honest most of us can get sick of the way our curls look from time to time. Braid-outs are a way for us to embrace our hair in a new form, without having to fear damage. My winter braid-outs consist of a full washday, with an extra-added step... a once a month blowout. Now we naturals love to make assumptions. Whether it be one gel is superior to another, or which curl cream actually is the best? Many of these assumptions begin with key questions.

Won't that break your hair off? You are adding heat, won't that add damage? Your hair must be so dry! Do you not fear heat damage? On the contrary, to all those assumptions, since I have started this winter method, my hair has not only refrained from frequent breakage, I also see a huge difference and improvement in the overall health and texture of my hair. The number one improvement is my hairs’ ability to retain moisture. No more frequent fighting with single strand knots, no more split ends breaking off. Whenever you add heat to hair that has texture there is always some rise for caution. However, with the method I have begun to use, my hair definitely speaks for itself! The holy grail of products, in helping me achieve this look are The Recover Restore Gro Leave-in Treatment and the Red by Kiss Handless Ceramic Blow Dryer. One of the major causes of heat damage is improper blow-drying technique and all that starts with the beloved dollar store hair dryers. Recently, there are many new methods of drying hair, but when it comes to me personally, no matter the number of times I blow dry or defuse my hair, I have consistently had amazing results with this reliable and affordable professional grade blow dryer. This ceramic tourmaline dryer is made in a way that specifically helps fight against stripping out materials the hair needs to fight heat damage. At the start of my routine, I always blow dry my hair after it has had time to air dry, and hair that has been fully wrapped in the Leave In Treatment. This treatment will add weight and sheen to your hair, not only does it work to lock in moisture it also works to fight against unwanted frizz. This Leave-in paired with the Red by Kiss blow dryer, will guarantee you multiple layers of added protection against heat damage. With the Leave-In Treatment and this professional dryer in my corner, fearing heat damage from a simple blowout is a thing of the past! Both products work in accord with one another to ensure you will always have the best outcome possible, with each use.

Tip #2: in addition to adding protective braid-outs to your routine, one of the most common mistakes we can make, is not adding enough moisture, or adding too much! As stated before, a successful braid-out always must start with a moisturized, well-oiled scalp. I know this is a bit controversial for some, you will hear of naturals that swear by their castor and thick oily butters, others that have chosen to stay away from oils all together and swear by the positive results they have seen. Overall, while every head of hair is different that much is true, but this is about your scalp and what your scalp is saying, not what the hair needs at this time. Maintaining a moisturized scalp is the key to every successful braid-out, and my go to product that goes above and beyond the job each time is the Recover Restore Gro Hair Butter. This thick butter melts onto the skin with ease. What makes this product so special is that it is not overly oily. The products' main job is to fight against dandruff and itchy scalp, something that is very common in winter seasons. DO NOT SKIP on scalp health. Your hair grows from this area, if this area is compromised, you will notice more issues with the hair you are able to grow. On average with this product, I apply it directly to the scalp before bed once every 3 days, and it gives me endless scalp pleasure throughout the winter season. Tip #3: our final tip for this article. Maintaining the moisture of our scalp is key to a successful hair journey, now then what about the hair itself? Whether you are naturally accustomed to creams, gels, and soufflés, or whether you are a natural who makes her own gel, our hair itself still needs moisture. In the winter, stay away from gels, and embrace thick moisture rich creams. Gels are amazing at locking in moisture during the summertime, but in the winter, they can be a key factor in what is causing your hair to be more prone to breakage, flakes, and drying out the scalp entirely. My go to product is the Hydrating Curl Cream from Recover Restore Gro. This thick cream at first glance seems very dense, as if it refuses to leave its container, but once this cream hits your hair, that is when the magic of it begins. This cream is much like a chameleon; its true form is a soft mixture that melts right onto the curls, attaching moisture down even to the smallest atoms of your hair. This product works well at sealing itself into the hair, promoting moisture at the smallest levels. One key thing that I would like to make more aware of is while braid-outs are a protective style; if you are not locking your ends correctly, you could actually be adding to the main cause of your damage. The ends of our hair are the oldest parts of your hair that is why they can be easily damaged. The further you get away from the scalp, the harder it is to maintain moisture into those aged ends. By taking an extra 5 seconds or so to twist the ends of your hair, you are actually sealing off those ends and locking in that much needed moisture. Not only, is this one-step going to give you an overall naturally looking curled effect, it also protects against those shaggy looking straight ends we see in some braid-outs. By doing this small trick, you are not only adding to the overall health of your hair, you will also have a bomb braid-out that looks so natural, full and bouncy!

In conclusion, as the season change so should our hair routine. Always make sure to take your time to detangle properly and to give your scalp and ends the best care possible! Also, think about investing in a silk pillowcase, to lock in the moisture as you sleep. By doing these few things I promise you will definitely have happier healthier hair that will shake and bounce all throughout the seasons! Enjoy the Gro!
